We recently had the luxury of hiking south mountain. South Mountain Park/Preserve is often referred to as the largest municipal park in the country. The park’s main entrance is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Hours vary at other trailhead locations. To be sure to get accurate hours, check the hiking map for specific hours. It boasts 51 miles of primary trails for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking for all ability levels.
The history of South Mountain Park dates back to 1924. Prominent local citizens, with the help of Sen. Carl Hayden, bought 13,000 acres from the federal government for $17,000. The history is very fascinating and really worth reading.
A few quick facts: Mount Suppoa (not accessible to the public) reaches 2,690 feet. Dobbins Lookout, at 2,330 feet, is the highest point in the park accessible by trail.
South mountain is a popular Arizona Valley destination and will likely find other outdoor enthusiast walking the park. It is rather interesting to witness all the people at an outdoor arena such as South Mountain. Everyone is general ultra friendly. Maybe its the excitement of being outside, or just a meeting place for people who appreciate the beauty of the desert. Either way everyone we have ever come across at south mountain, or any other city owned park/preserve, have been very friendly, making for a great adventure. We recommend South Mountain Park for any family activity idea. It is family and stroller friendly. It is an easy hike or one can choose a more challenging hike with over 13 different trails to choose from.
